Smiley For Kylie was named for 12-year-old Kylie Myers, who faced her cancer challenge with courage and a radiant smile. Before her death in 2015, Kylie charged her family with finding a cure for childhood cancer so that no other child, or family, would have to suffer as she had. The organization was formed for the purpose of funding research which will lead to safer and more effective cures for childhood cancer, as well as to raise awareness and support children and families impacted by the disease. With over 2500 deaths each year in the U.S., cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children. However, less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s annual budget is dedicated to defeating childhood cancer. Smiley for Kylie strives to help fill the research funding gap.
