Following We Are Central PA’s January 2nd article, titled “Alternative Heating Systems Raise Concerns,” HVAC Education offered three tips to assist consumers in safely and effectively using alternative heating methods.

HVAC Education, or Arizona.HVACED.com offered consumers three tips for safely and effectively using alternative heating methods, including space heaters and electric stoves. These tips were created on the heels of the January 2nd WeAreCentralPA.com article, “Alternative Heating Systems Raise Concerns.” While homeowners are typically willing to contact professionals with the proper HVAC training regarding their main heating and cooling systems, few contact professionals or simply read safety warnings when it comes to alternative heating methods. Using the tips provided below, homeowners may safely use alternative heating methods to complement HVAC systems.

Kevin Flanigan voiced concerns regarding the use of alternative heating implements, citing the frequent misuse of these tools as cause for concern. Because many homeowners pay little to no attention to their main heating systems, they pay little attention to the space heaters also used in the home. This is a grave mistake, Flanigan argues, and can result in house fires.

While professionals with Arizona HVAC training can assist homeowners in learning to properly use heating systems, alternative heating methods typically rely upon oft-unread user’s manuals. To safely and effectively use alternative heating methods, homeowners would do well to abide by Arizona HVAC Education’s following tips:

1. Unplug all alternative heating methods when leaving the house. Unlike standard heaters, space heaters are not intended to function when people have left the home, as a simple paper or piece of fabric near the heater can be burned or catch fire.

2. Maintain a safe distance from heating implements. While space heaters should always be plugged directly into the wall outlet, they should be in an area clear of blankets, clothing, and anything that could be burned or ignited.

3. Read all safety warnings and instructions. Though most individuals only read manuals if something is unclear or is not functioning properly, it is important to read the safety warnings and precautions in order to properly use different space heater models.

Kevin Flanigan is a 20-year reporter for We Are Central PA. His work is broad in nature, and covers a wide variety of local and national news stories.

HVAC Education offered three tips for consumers using alternative heating methods such as space heaters. While space heaters certainly have their place, they are frequently misused, and are a sincere safety concern for many HVAC professionals. The tips provided by HVAC Education are simple and straightforward, and include unplugging all devices before leaving the home, ensuring that all devices are away from the wall and are separated from anything that could catch fire, and reading all safety precautions. Though professionals with HVAC training should be entrusted with standard heating equipment, consumers are responsible for small heating tools, such as space heaters, and should take all necessary precautions to guarantee safe use.
