MYSTIC, Conn., July 30, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- With the summer months approaching, it's crucial that the elderly stay hydrated and cool. "Those most at risk for heat illnesses and death, in fact, are the elderly," said Wes Downing, Administrator of Apple Rehab Mystic.
To prevent elderly heat stroke this summer, Downing lists the following five tips:
No. 1: Wear the right clothing, whether indoors or outdoors. "If you're in oppressive summer heat and then in a cold air-conditioned room, dress in layers so you can adjust throughout the day," advised Downing. "Dressing in layers will ensure comfort, whether you are indoor with air conditioning or in the outdoor heat."
No. 2: Be aware of extreme heat events and warning signs for heat-related illness. This includes headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst, and heavy sweating.
No. 3: Don't wait until you are thirsty to drink. "Your body needs fluid to keep cool and to replenish the liquids lost on hot summer days," added Downing. "If you are increasing your activity, you need to also increase fluids."
No. 4: Carry a water bottle with you. "It is imperative to always have water handy and to drink from it regularly," stressed Downing.
No. 5: Eat hydrating foods. "This includes cucumbers, radishes, watermelon, and strawberries, all of which contain at least 90% water by weight," concluded Downing.
