ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Aug. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Alaska company Arctic Solar Ventures (ASV) has been recognized for its contributions to a growing industry. More than 10,600 megawatts of solar power were installed in the U.S. last year and ASV is leading the charge in Alaska. The Anchorage-based company installed 242.7 kilowatts of solar power in 2017, earning them an overall rank of 422 on the Top Solar Contractors list. The first-ever Alaska company to earn a place on the list, ASV also earned rankings of 232 in the residential solar category and 218 in the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) category.
The Top Solar Contractors list is developed by Solar Power World magazine to recognize the work completed by solar contractors across the U.S. Produced annually, the list celebrates the achievements of solar developers, subcontractors and installers within the utility, commercial and residential markets, and ranks contractors by kilowatts installed in the previous year.
"Solar Power World is very excited about the 2018 class of Top Solar Contractors," said Kelly Pickerel, editor in chief of Solar Power World. "We're happy to feature a strong group of thriving U.S. solar installers on the 2018 Top Solar Contractors list. These companies truly are at the top of their markets."
Arctic Solar Ventures employs nine Alaskans who installed 242.7 kilowatts of solar power in 2017. Since its founding in 2015, the company has brought online nearly 500 kilowatts of solar.
"We are thrilled to be recognized by our peers for helping place Alaska solar on the map as a viable and fast-growing market. We have seen continued growth in 2018 and look forward to strong 3rd and 4th quarters this year," said founder and CEO, Stephen Trimble.
ASV has seen four straight years of year-over-year growth in the non-residential market. In 2017, growth was 28 percent; a major highlight for the company. A large uptick in commercial projects can be seen across Southcentral Alaska in communities like Homer, Kenai, Anchorage and Palmer. Progress has not slowed for ASV in 2018; the first quarter of this year showed a 13 percent growth over the first quarter of last year.
The U.S. solar market had its biggest year ever in 2016, installing more than 15,000 MW. Although installations in 2017 dropped to 10,608 MW, the total still represents 40 percent growth over 2015 numbers. The year-over-year downturn can be attributed to the large influx of 2016 projects rushing to meet the anticipated expiration of a 30 percent federal tax credit that was eventually renewed. Last year also saw uncertainty surrounding potential Section 201 tariffs on imported solar panels, which may have led to delayed or canceled projects.
Thirty percent of all new electric generating capacity in the U.S. that was brought online last year was from solar energy. By 2023, more than 15,000 MW of solar are expected to be installed annually. ASV will continue to contribute to the wave of increasing solar generation in Alaska.
