Esteemed New York Times Art Critic in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 23, 2013 -- Roberta Smith, the acclaimed Senior Art Critic for the New York Times, will be Otis College of Art and Design’s Critic in Residence, Fall Semester 2013.
Roberta Smith was born in New York City, raised in Lawrence, Kansas, and earned a B.A. from Grinnell College in 1969. An alumna of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, she worked at the Museum of Modern Art and the Paula Cooper Gallery before becoming a professional art critic in the 1970s, contributing to Artforum and serving as a senior editor for Art in America. In 1981, she became Art Critic for the Village Voice before moving to the New York Times in 1986. In 2003, the College Art Association honored Smith with the prestigious Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism.

The Critic in Residence program of Otis College of Art and Design’s Fine Arts Department has been in existence since 2001. Outstanding critics are invited to share their work and ideas with the Otis community, as well as with the larger Los Angeles community through teaching, studio visits, and public lectures.
This year, Otis College of Art and Design, Santa Monica College Art Department, and the Santa Monica Associates present a free public lecture by Roberta Smith:
WHAT: “ART CRITICISM IN THE EXPANDED FIELD” - A public lecture by Roberta Smith, who will discuss the ways criticism has changed: the effects of the Internet, blogging and tweeting on writing “print” criticism for a daily newspaper, as well as the expansion of the art world itself and the kinds of art being made.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
