Academy of Responsible Tattooing Joins TeenPact for Community Outreach Event
Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) June 04, 2015 -- In an effort to spread awareness on safe tattooing to teenagers, the Academy of Responsible Tattooing recently collaborated with TeenPact to hold a day-long outreach event at St. Francis College in downtown Brooklyn, NY.
The event, held on Saturday, May 9, consisted of a series of workshops such as "More than just sex: Positive Actions and Choices for Teens," each of which were followed by a Q&A session and one-on-one private consultations.
"ART is occasionally asked to present at events similar to this workshop in order to educate youth about tattooing," says Christina Seeber, Marketing Manager. "We may teach these lessons to tattoo apprentices in our A.R.T. locations, but we make a big effort to educate all people to make sure they're making the right decisions when getting tattooed."
TeenPact, a New York City-based organization dedicated to fostering teen-oriented programs in leadership, citizenship and government, helped facilitate the event as one of the Academy of Responsible Tattooing's educational partners.
Oksana Weber, professional tattoo artist and piercer and Manager of Body and Soul Tattoos in Jersey City, along with Carlos Garcia, a Brooklyn tattoo artist at Body Art & Soul Tattoos, were also present at the workshop. The two held a workshop entitled “The Dangers of Poke and Scratch: The Benefits of Using a Professional Body Artist."
“Over the last couple years, ‘scratching,’ or tattooing from home, has become a hobby for young people across the country," says Paul-Anthony Surdi, CEO of the Academy of Responsible Tattooing. "Never before have tattoo machines been so easily available online. This prevents a huge health risk. When young people just think it's fun to tattoo their friends from home, what they’re not thinking about is all the infectious diseases they could share between each other. Our professional tattoo artists are here to educate about the realities of getting body art."
Surdi, along with the rest of the team at the Academy of Responsible Tattooing, see these workshops and events as a way to better educate the public about body art and the risks associated with at-home piercing and tattooing.
“Teenagers are resourceful, they always have been. What we’re seeing is home piercings and tattoos before legal age," explains John Costello, Apprentice Advocate at the Academy of Responsible Tattooing. "If they’re going to find creative ways to explore body art, we hope they will at least be better informed and make smarter choices. The hope is that they will wait until 18 and visit a professional body piercer or tattoo artist.”
