Throughout history, art has been a powerful tool of different voices for the society. The famous example is Banksy who is known for his humorous art about today’s society. Besides Banksy, there is also another world-renowned contemporary artist wants to express her feeling toward the situation. The contemporary artist created a mind-blowing piece of art to grieve the pain of the death of George Floyd and the racial inequality that is still going on in this 21st century. Yee Wong, a talented artist created an artwork that goes by the name “Peace! George!” to express that love and peace is what is needed in the middle of a big racial crisis.
The artwork honors George Floyd and promotes love and peace which is what we need to stop this racial crisis under all circumstances. No doubt, what happened is heartbreaking and has left many in a state of shock and fear. The unfortunate event has forced the world to educate themselves about the racial crisis. Although we have so many articles, books, and researches to increase our knowledge, art still remains one of the most powerful tools to send across a message. Her artwork reflects the ultimate and simplest solution for racism today that is “Love and Peace”.
As George Floyd’s brother has said in one of his speeches, “I understand y’all upset, but like it was already said, I doubt y’all half as upset as I am. So if I’m not over here wildin’ out, if I am not over here blowing up stuff, if I am not over here messing up my community, then what are y’all doing? What are y’all doing? Y’all doing nothing, because that’s not gonna bring my brother back at all. It may feel good for the moment, just like when you drink, but when it come down, you’re gonna wonder what you did. My family is a peaceful family. My family is God-fearing.”
It is definitely heartbreaking to see the injustice that happened to George Floyd. But violence can only worsen the situation and hurt more innocent people. We need to transform this destructive energy into something positive that can actually improve the racism situation in future. That is the love we need now. Don’t hurt each other anymore because of our differences. Let’s work together peacefully and build something better together for our future and the future for our generations to come.
