E-pickpocketing is a new, electronic version of pickpocketing, and it’s occurring at alarming rates around the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Thieves steal data by simply walking by and scanning RFID-enabled documents like passports, credit cards, driver licenses, and ID cards with portable devices as small as a smartphone. These RFID scanners are powerful enough to scan a foot away, even from inside a bag or wallet, and there’s no way of knowing until victims see the bank statement.
