Attorney Matt Powell has been handling personal injury cases for 26 years and has seen more clients come in from motorcycle accidents over the last year than ever before. Matt points out that “...motorcycle riders are 16x more likely, per mile, to die than those in cars.” This statistic applies to every age group. Whether it is due to the higher speeds at which some younger motorcyclists like to ride at, or the slower reflexes attributed to the older bikers, the inherent safety issues still apply to everyone on the road.

“The road is a shared space,” says Matt. “All too often, we forget that. As the number of motorcycle riders increase, we as a community, need to be more aware so that these rising statistics can be dramatically reduced.”

Recently, the Tampa Bay News reported on a motorcycle accident that unfortunately involved the rider dying at the scene.

“It is unfortunate that things like this end up happening to people”, says Matt. “But this just reaffirms the fact that we, as a society, need to be more proactive and cautious so that we can limit this death toll as best we can.”

As with most personal injury cases, Attorney Matt Powell suggests that when one is hurt, especially when in an auto or motorcycle accident, to first, escape immediate danger if possible. Seeking immediate medical attention is also something that Matt suggests, no matter the type of accident. However, it is especially critical to seek medical attention, when riding a motorcycle, regardless of whether the operator was wearing a helmet and feels fine.

“Head and chest injuries,” says Matt, “are among the primary causes of death in motorcycle accidents, so you should always undergo examination by doctors and obtain necessary diagnostic tests, without delay.”
