Board certification holds surgeons accountable for excellence and gives patients an added level of trust and security—something I want all my patients to experience.

Dr. Joel Gotvald, MD, FACS, RPVI, founder of Austin Vein Specialists, underwent and passed recertification examinations through the American Board of Surgery and the Vascular Board of the American Board of Surgery in October 2014.

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is a non-profit organization that has assessed qualifications of professionals in the field of surgery for over 70 years. According to the organization, while not every doctor is required to become board certified, those who voluntarily take exams to receive and maintain certification demonstrate a commitment to “lifelong learning and quality patient care.”

In 1976, the ABS began to require re-certification in order for surgeons to maintain valid certificates. To maintain board certification, surgeons must “demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, continuing education, and practice improvement” as well as pass a written exam known as the Maintenance of Certification Examination (MOC) every 10 years.

The 5-hour General Surgery MOC Examination consists of about 200 multiple-choice questions that test a surgeon’s knowledge and clinical judgment. The 6-hour Vascular Surgery MOC Examination consists of about 240 multiple-choice questions that test a surgeon’s knowledge and clinical judgment. By passing both exams, Dr. Gotvald extended his certifications for general and vascular surgery through December 2022 and December 2027, respectively.

“Board certification is a voluntary but necessary part of meeting my own personal standards of quality,” commented Dr. Gotvald. “Board certification holds surgeons accountable for excellence and gives patients an added level of trust and security—something I want all my patients to experience,” he added.
