SALZBURG, Austria, September 11, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Just in time for Automechanika Frankfurt, Authentic Vision, a developer of secure tagging and technology-driven product authentication solutions, has released the results of its car owner survey on counterfeiting in the automotive aftermarket.
In the survey, car owners expressed significant concerns about the potential for damage and safety issues from counterfeit automotive aftermarket goods. Survey respondents also shared that they would take concrete actions to avoid pirated goods and warn family and friends.
Key survey findings included:
- Clarity that owners value authenticity, with 84% saying they only want genuine aftermarket parts and goods used in their cars.
- Concern about risks that appeared to be a driver shaping car owner opinions. 79% cited the possibility for damage as an important or very important concern, while 78% said fake goods can cause safety issues.
- Lack of owner understanding about how to detect counterfeit products. As a result, two-thirds hold mechanics or retailers responsible for ensuring they do not buy counterfeit goods.
- A willingness of owners to act when they do find fake goods or hear of issues. 76% will share information with family and friends about a brand or retailer that has a problem with fake goods to make sure they protect themselves and their cars. Plus, 64% agreed or somewhat agreed that they would pay more for aftermarket goods they could verify are truly authentic.

"Counterfeiters have become more sophisticated and now have the ability to enter today's unsecured global supply chains at nearly any point. As a result, it is increasingly difficult for a brand or manufacturer to effectively defend its products in a way that is secure, easy to use and cost effective," said Thomas Weiss, Authentic Vision's founder and chief executive officer.
"The automotive aftermarket presents a significant opportunity for these counterfeiters given that many car owners clearly don't have the knowledge and tools to detect fake products. We are committed to helping raise awareness and stopping the flow of fake goods because of the potential for serious risk to car owners and passengers," said Weiss.
Survey Methodology
Authentic Vision's online survey was completed by 207 U.S. car owners from a SurveyMonkey audience panel in May 2018. The audience sample mirrors the U.S. census population, and results have a margin of error of +/- 7%. Professional mechanics were excluded from the survey responses.
