Richard F. Edlich, MD, PhD, Honored in Author Solutions Real Authors, Real Impact Campaign for His Book, Which Changed Laws, Saved Lives
Bloomington, IN (PRWEB) March 13, 2014 -- Author Solutions, LLC, a Penguin Random House company and the world leader in supported self-publishing services, is featuring iUniverse author Richard F. Edlich, MD, PhD, and his book, “Deadly Powder on Medical Gloves; A Wake-Up Call to the Food and Drug Administration,” in its Real Authors, Real Impact campaign this month. The book, which he co-authored with Julie A. Garrison, BS, and Heather N. Smith, was self-published through iUniverse in 2011.
Edlich, who passed away in January of this year at the age of 74, wrote the book to persuade the FDA to issue a ban against the use of powdered latex gloves by medical professionals. He cited scientific studies that have documented that the deadly powder on gloves increases wound infection and spreads tumor cells throughout cavities, among causing other afflictions.
“Our book was written to convince all health-care professionals to use only powder-free gloves,” Dr. Edlich reflected in an August 2013 iUniverse interview. “More importantly, we sent multiple copies of the book to the FDA, along with a petition to have them ban the corn starch powder from all medical and surgical gloves.”
His book and work made a difference. A month earlier, on July 3, Dr. Edlich received an e-mail from the FDA, proposing a ban on the use of these gloves within 18 months. It was another milestone in a decorated medical career that included Dr. Edlich’s pioneering work in wound and burn care; his meeting with former president Bill Clinton to advocate for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act; and having the Distinguished Service Award bestowed upon him by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
