Scott Coleman, Author of “Best When Broken,” Featured in Author Solutions Real Authors, Real Impact Campaign

A happy-go-lucky 17-year-old, Coleman’s life changed in the blink of an eye when an accidental dive while water-skiing left him with a broken neck. In seconds, a strong, athletic young man found himself confined to a wheelchair. More than 30 years after the accident, Coleman recounts the thoughts and feelings that swept over him while he was lying face down in that lake, unable to move or breathe.
“Breaking my neck was a moment of truth for me,” Coleman reflected. “It helped me realize the most important things in my life. And that was a bad thing that happened that ended up being really a blessing as a result of the following years.”
After his accident, Coleman discovered much he’d taken for granted. He said he bought into a lie of what happiness looks like, defined by parties, wealth, health, athletic stardom and popularity, rather than the importance of his faithful, supportive family, his friends and the grace of God. The title reflects how he views himself after the accident—best when broken. Coleman said he didn’t set out to write a bestseller, but to say “thank you” and give his testimony.
“If not for the grace of God, and the grace extended to me by friends—the kind of friends who know me, warts and all and still love me anyway—I would be dead. There is no doubt in my mind about it: I would be dead,” Coleman said. “I wanted to express my gratitude and set the record straight that there is very little admirable about me, except for my God and my friends. If someone happens to be encouraged by what I have written, well, that is the icing on the cake.”
