Author Challenges the Mental Health Care System with Proposed Changes in New Book
TRENTON, N.J. (PRWEB) June 24, 2019 -- In response to the ever-growing demand for mental health advocates and awareness, author Stefan Lerner, M.D. challenges the concept of “mental” illness and examines the system in which it is diagnosed and treated in his book, “The Treacherous Dichotomy: Physical Versus Mental Illness”.
With over 40 years’ experience in clinical psychopharmacology, Lerner uses his extensive experience to educate the public about the negative connotations of the label “mental” illness and introduce a new label, “neuriatric” illness that better represents these illnesses as neurological disorders—not something that can be cured by mental willpower alone.
His research into the mental health care system brings him to the conclusion that medical professionals need to focus on the physical brain and its pathologies to treat mental illnesses like neurological illnesses to reduce stigma and provide accurate treatment. Lerner asserts that once society begins viewing mental illness as illnesses of the brain, patients suffering from it can experience reduced suffering.
“The so-called ‘mental healthcare system’ is confusing, inefficient and deficient in competence,” Lerner said. “Thousands suffer and millions of dollars are wasted. I hope the teachings in my book can be a force for change.”
“The Treacherous Dichotomy: Physical Versus Mental Illness” is an exceptional resource for mental health professionals and patients as its teachings explore the problems that the mental health care system faces and how the system can be improved to provide superior care for patients.
