Author Dolly Anthony begins her work, writing, “I was born in Tarboro, North Carolina, August 12, 1956. According to one of my older brothers, the name Dolly was given to me by my mother in respect of my great-grandmother. My mother, Jessie Mae Anthony, was my only parent. I have no memories of my father, nor have I ever heard her speak of him. I had a fairly well-rounded family. There were twelve of us: six girls and six boys. My mother kept us together the best she could, considering our circumstances. One of my sisters had another caretaker, and one of my brothers developed what seemed to be a stage of Autism, based on my observations. He responded with intense guidance. We would sometimes guide him by taking his hand. My mother placed him in a facility to treat his condition, and when they both would come home, they were treated with love and patience. I mentioned this to say that she was a humble individual that knew she needed help parenting.”
