Gregg Turner, a collegiate educator, has completed his new book “William and Henry Walters”: an engaging and informative work that discusses the contributions of a father-and-son team who founded the fabled Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, which, by 1931, owned, controlled, or operated over 14,000 miles of transportation lines.
As the author describes in his work, William and Henry Walters are largely remembered today for their achievements in collecting works of art and establishing a world-class museum in Baltimore, but equally significant were their extraordinary efforts in founding and building up one of the great railway systems in America.
Author Gregg Turner introduces his work, writing, “This short history explores the railway careers of William and Henry Walters—father and son, founders of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Whereas much has appeared about their remarkable achievements in collecting works of art and establishing a world-class museum for such in Baltimore, little has ever been written about their railway endeavors. This is largely due to the scarcity of primary research materials. This study, however, relies chiefly on secondary sources and the memories of others. What remains of their renowned company today is largely owned and operated by CSX Transportation of Jacksonville, Florida, America’s third-largest railroad company having some 21,000 route miles.”
Published by Page Publishing, Gregg Turner’s fascinating work invites readers to climb aboard for a special journey into this unique chapter of American railroad history.
