Author Shares Personal Tale of Lifelong Learning and Personal Growth
Tom Segady encourages critical thinking and empathy for others in new book
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., June 6, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Academic and author Tom Segady has released a new book, sharing his life lessons with readers. "A Texas Education: Learning (and Unlearning) in a Strangely Familiar Land" chronicles his experiences from hitchhiking cross country at only 18 years old, to his encounters in over 30 years as a college professor.
Segady encourages readers to be willing to learn at any stage of life, potentially from places or people they may not expect.
"I wanted to create a different perspective on what it means to be 'educated'," Segady said "One finds many teachers along this path, many of whom do not possess degrees and reside completely outside the college classroom. The stories and lessons I have garnered will, hopefully, redefine ways of seeing and learning for readers."
"A Texas Education" addresses not only Segady's personal experiences, but topics such as overcoming racial biases, issues in higher education, and conflicts between social classes. From backstage encounters in universities and anxiety-ridden students, to a transformational encounter with a Black man who went from catching chickens to support his family to becoming successfully wealthy, Segady's book shares in a lifetime of non-traditional education.
"What is critical is remaining open to the encounters with others and seeing the joy in the act of experiencing" Segady said. "Life and learning are performance arts, and the teacher often can only learn the art of teaching if she or he is constantly learning through the life-worlds of others. Virtually all of these stories emerge from a chance encounter with a strangely familiar culture—Texas."
