San Diego Personal Injury Attorney Ronald B. Laba Comments on News Story about California Medical Debt Rates for Accident Victims
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) November 01, 2014 -- Commenting on an ABC 23 news article detailing the impact of medical bills on injury victims, San Diego personal injury lawyer Ronald B. Laba today stressed the importance of checking for billing errors and seeking legal advice after being injured in an accident in California.
Laba, a personal injury lawyer in San Diego with 30 years’ experience, based his comments on an October 13 news article, “Study says California has third highest rate of medical debt in nation.” According to the article, a recent study found that California residents face the third-highest rate of medical debt in the nation, including a number of billing errors on claims collected at hospitals across the state.
“The physical and emotional impact of an accident may last for months or years. While money may be the last thing on an accident victim’s mind after an accident, the financial impact simply cannot be overlooked,” Laba said. “This study serves as a reminder that California residents need to take every step necessary to make sure their medical bills are accurate and compensated by insurance companies after an accident.”
The ABC 23 news report indicated that the study, conducted by NerdWallet, collected records from various federal agencies from 2010 to 2013. The study found California adults over age 18 to have incurred the third-highest amount of medical debt in the United States, trailing only New York and Texas.
Furthermore, claims surveyed at hospitals around California revealed that more than two-thirds of claims contained errors and more than one-third of all claims overcharged Medicare, according to the study, with an estimated 20 percent of adults across the United States to be contacted by bill collectors about medical debt by the end of the year.
“When somebody is injured in any type of accident through no fault of their own, it’s imperative to speak with an attorney immediately,” Laba said. “In addition to pursuing compensation for lost wages and other damages, an attorney can pore over medical records to ensure accident victims aren’t paying for surgeries, medication and other medical treatments they never received.”
