West Palm Beach Car Accident Attorney David J. Glatthorn Comments on ‘Worst Driver’ Report
West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) January 10, 2014 -- A recent study that ranked Florida as one of the most dangerous states for drivers should serve as a call to action for drivers in the Sunshine State to practice safer habits, according to West Palm Beach car accident lawyer David J. Glatthorn.
The Palm Beach Post (“Report: Florida drivers are sixth worst in nation,” December 16) reported that the study, compiled by the website Car Insurance Companion from sources such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), found Florida drivers at highest risk of driving carelessly.
“The Car Insurance Companion study uses data compiled from a number of reputable sources to rate states based on fatality rates, failure to obey traffic signals and seatbelt laws, drunk driving, careless driving and tickets issued,” said Glatthorn. “Palm Beach County has seen improvements in recent years. For example, the amount of tickets issued for careless driving was cut in half between 2009 and 2012. The study, however, clearly indicates that more work needs to be done in Florida to prevent careless driving accidents.”
According to the Palm Beach Post, statistics compiled by Car Insurance Companion ranked Florida low in a number of key categories. The study ranked Florida as 51st (including Washington, D.C.) for careless driving, 48th for citations issued, 38th for failure to obey traffic signals and seatbelt laws, and 33rd for fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
The Palm Beach Post also reported that Florida ranked 18th for drunken driving and that the state’s fatality rate has decreased consistently over the past five years. Additionally, the article said that Palm Beach County has seen a sharp decrease in tickets issued within the county over the last five years.
“It’s important for our state’s drivers to remember, at all times, that careless driving can quickly lead to a tragedy,” said Glatthorn. “We have handled many cases involving careless drivers who caused serious injuries and fatalities. That’s why we encourage all drivers to stay alert, drive calmly and defensively and avoid distractions. Don’t drive while impaired. Do the sensible thing and call a cab or a sober friend to get a ride home.”
Glatthorn said anyone injured in an accident or who loses a loved one should obtain advice from legal counsel. An attorney can help pursue compensation and hold the negligent individual accountable, he said.
