Detroit Car Accident Attorney Gerald Acker Weighs In On Seatbelt Safety
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) August 08, 2013 -- Detroit personal injury lawyer Gerald Acker said today the consequences of neglecting to wear seatbelts can be serious in the event of an auto accident.
“Recently, we’ve seen accidents on I-275 and I-375 involving drivers or passengers being ejected from their vehicles after being involved in a car accident,” said Acker, who represents injury victims and families who have lost loved ones due to negligence. “Tragically, we’ve seen some of these instances turn deadly as a result of a driver or passenger not wearing a seatbelt.”
In an article published by the Detroit Free Press, (“Girl, 11, ejected from car as it rolls over on I-275 in Livonia,” July 7), it was reported that an 11-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition after getting thrown from a car that rolled over several times on I-275.
According to the article, the girl was sitting in the back seat of the car when the accident occurred. State police concluded that she, along with the other back seat passengers, were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
As reported by CBS Detroit (“Mount Clemens Teen Dies After Being Ejected From Car,” June 27) a similar accident in late June proved to be deadly. Michigan State Police said a 19-year-old was killed after his vehicle crashed into a median on I-375.
CBS Detroit said that State Police believe speed was a factor in the accident and that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
“If you’re not wearing your seatbelt and are involved in a car accident, the injuries may be more severe than if you were wearing your seatbelt,” Acker said. “The fact that you weren’t wearing a seatbelt might also affect your personal injury claim if someone else caused the accident. Insurance companies are quick to point out when somebody’s not wearing a seatbelt, and your damages may be reduced. You might have made a mistake, but it doesn’t mean you should suffer. In such complicated cases, it’s wise to consult with a personal injury lawyer about your rights.”
