Uninsured Drivers Still Pose Considerable Risk, Say AYB Law Solicitors
(PRWEB UK) 2 March 2015 -- AYB Law Solicitors, the personal injury lawyers based in Preston, have warned of the continued risk posed by uninsured drivers on UK roads. With the recent winter weather creating particularly hazardous driving conditions, accidents are a risk that cannot be ignored, and those who take to the roads without insurance for their vehicle add to the danger. According to the Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MIB), uninsured and untraced drivers are responsible for 130 fatalities and 26,500 injuries annually; those who seek compensation for such injuries may face a complex claim process and a lengthy investigation as there is no insurer to claim against.
Although the total number of uninsured drivers on the UK’s roads has dropped since 2005, a significant number continue to drive illegally without the mandatory protection. The MIB recently announced that they had issued over two million warnings since 2011 to uninsured drivers; a third of those warned still go on to receive a fixed penalty notice, and there are as many as 6,000 prosecutions a month, with police seizing an average of nearly 2,500 uninsured vehicles per week.
Young and inexperienced drivers represent a significant proportion of these drivers, with recent figures from the DVLA indicating that driving without insurance is the number one reason for drivers being banned within the first two years of their license. Of 40,481 driving licenses revoked since June 2010, over half – 21, 148 – were banned for driving without insurance. Research has also shown that uninsured drivers are five times more likely to be involved in collisions on the road, to fail to comply with road traffic requirements and engage in other criminal activity.
A spokesperson for AYB Law Solicitors said; “Despite measures that have been taken to reduce the problem of uninsured drivers, we still have a considerable number of clients approaching us after being involved in accidents where the driver at fault had no insurance; these drivers are still a definite risk both to themselves and to other motorists and road users. Any accident can be devastating, but learning that the other driver cannot be traced or was driving without insurance can often come as a second blow. We urge all drivers to be clear on their insurance status, and not to take the risk of driving illegally.”
