Sierra Regional Spine Institute Employee Wins National Powerlifting Championship
Reno, NV (PRWEB) September 16, 2015 -- Austin Showalter of Reno, Nevada won the Junior Division Class of the USA Powerlifting Bench Nationals, held between August 28-30 in Scranton, PA. Showalter competed in the 163 pound weight class for competitors aged 20-23. At a previous bench press competition, Showalter set a world record at age 19-he weighed 165 pounds and bench pressed 335 pounds.
Sierra Regional Spine Institute, which provides a range of treatment options for back and neck pain, sponsored Showalter as he advanced through state, regional, and finally the national competition. At the Scranton national championship, Showalter achieved a final bench press of 336 pounds to win his division.
“Winning this last competition was an exciting experience for my first national championship. The people I met were great," Showalter said. "They helped me grasp how things work in a competition at this level. I have to thank my home gym, American Iron, for all their help in preparing me for this competition with a strained shoulder. I also want to give a huge thanks to Sierra Regional Spine for supporting me in my journey through this sport.”
Showalter suffered from a number of health issues as a child, including Osteoneucrosis, a hereditary bone disease that erodes joints. After enduring a hip replacement, two knee surgeries, a shoulder surgery, and treatments that rebuilt his cartilage, Showalter decided to pursue fitness and competitive weightlifting to improve his health.
“We are proud of Austin’s continued success in his competitions and are happy to have him as part of the team here at Sierra Regional Spine," said Practice Administrator Penny Forbes.
At the Reno spinal clinic, Showalter works in administrative support while receiving training for the physical therapy department. Showalter is also working towards becoming an anesthesiologist.
