‘Gimme Gadgets, Not Shoes,’ Say Teens Headed Back To School

New survey from FatWallet indicates that clothes remain #1 on teens’ back to school shopping lists, but smartphones and laptops are now neck-and-neck for the second most popular item.

FatWallet.com, where savvy shoppers share coupons and earn cash back at over 1,500 stores, announced results of its 2013 Back to School Survey that found teens are increasingly wired and focused on tech gadget for back to school. The national survey was conducted online by TNS on behalf of FatWallet.com in July 2013*.

80% of the teens surveyed already have a cell phone (90% of females, 76% of males), yet many were ready for an upgrade to a new smartphone. The items students most want for starting this school year are:

  •     38% want Clothing (52% of females, 25% of males)
  •     15% want Smartphones (10% of females, 19% of males)
  •     14% want Laptops (17% of females, 12% of males)
  •     11% want Shoes (5% of females, 18% of males)
  •     10% want Tablets (8% of females, 10% of males)
  •     4% want Backpacks

When asked which computing products they most want for school this year, 32% of all teens surveyed want laptops, including 40% of females ages 15-17, while 23% want iPads, 10% Android tablets and only 2% want Kindles. Surprisingly, 9% of male teens still want a desktop computer (7% overall) and 25% of all teens surveyed do not want any of these products. Almost all surveyed (97%) said they use a computer at home and 74% use computers at school.

When it came to cell phones, 80% of teens surveyed said they have their own already, including more than 90% of females ages 15-17. But, when asked which of the smartphones they most want, 35% that already own a cell phone said they want an iPhone 5 versus 21% wanting a Samsung Galaxy S4. Of all teens surveyed, 31% want the iPhone 5 versus just 18% wanting a Samsung Galaxy S4, while 23% said they would take any smartphone.

According to a 2013 back to school survey by the NRF, total spending on back-to-school is expected to reach $26.7 billion (back-to-college is expected to reach $45.8 billion) while 36.6% of parents with school children say they will do more comparative shopping online and 18.5% will shop online more often.
