It is estimated there are over 3,000 consumer-reporting agencies (CRA’s) in the United States that provide background checks and screening, yet less than 2% of these are compliant and accredited.

Peopletrail announced today the launch of its public awareness campaign, “Not all background checks are the same.” The campaign’s goal is to increase security for businesses and improve public safety, in particular within our schools and athletic programs. The campaign incorporates a series of awareness ads targeted to human resource professionals and hiring managers. Webinars and public speaking engagements are also being offered by Peopletrail to help key decision makers understand the criteria one should use when selecting a screening partner and the depth of research required to get an accurate background check and screening report.

“There is an assumption with many that a one source database exists where criminal background and screening information could be found, and that all background checks therefore are the same. The reality is that background screening is more of an art than a science and there are multiple resources from federal, state, and county sources needed to get an accurate background and screening report,” stated Wallace T. Davis, President and CEO of Peopletrail. “The myth of a one source database is a dangerous notion, especially when you are considering the background checks involving workplace security and the safety of the public, specifically with our children. Federal, state, and county sources don’t always speak to one another or share the same information. It is critical that a screening provider knows where to go for the information, and consults with their clients on the depth and breadth of research required to gather compliant screening reports.”

The “Not all background checks are the same” campaign addresses a number of myths surrounding background checks and the variables that affect an accurate background report. Identifying the reason for the check, the type of position, and the industry specific requirements needed, are all important first steps in requesting a background check on an individual. Peopletrail states within the campaign that it’s also important to understand that not all background screening reports are compliant, and it’s critical to find a screening partner that is accredited and compliant with all laws and industry guidelines.

It is estimated there are over 3,000 consumer-reporting agencies (CRA’s) in the United States that provide background checks and screening, yet less than 2% of these are compliant and accredited. The barriers to entry to become a background check and screening company or CRA are very low. However the barriers to compliance and being accredited are high, and very few CRA’s hold themselves to the standards required to be compliant.

Peopletrail is committed to providing education on background check and screening services so organizations can keep compliant. Undertaking the necessary breadth and depth of investigation for a background check and screening on an individual will help place the best individuals in the workplace and public positions, including those that have interaction with our children through school and athletic programs. It will also help companies hire the best candidate for the job keeping the company productive and secure.
