BearCom, a nationwide provider of wireless communications equipment and solutions, offered suggestions on how two-way radios can help reduce loss during the busy holiday shopping season and all year round.
Loss, also called shrink, consists of shoplifting, employee or supply fraud, organized retail crime and administrative errors. According to Marianne Wilson at Chain Storage Age, “Growing shrink concerns have put loss prevention high on the agenda of retailers.”

Johnston gives some suggestions for basic shrink prevention that are especially important during the hectic holiday retail season:
Inconspicuous communications – When an employee needs to contact a manager or security personnel, they should do it in a way that doesn’t bring attention to the situation. Two-way radios with earpiece accessories enable quiet and discreet communication.
Communicating suspicious activity – When management and staff use two-way radios to communicate on a regular basis, all employees can be aware of suspicious activity at any given time. Staff can keep an eye on customers who may be about to shoplift, and employees can monitor individuals who could potentially damage merchandise. Breakage and vandalism can be reduced if rowdy customers are identified quickly.
Constant contact with security – Many stores have policies on whether or not to pursue shoplifters. If employees use two-way radios to communicate with security personnel, they will be given enough time to consider liability issues and how to proceed.
Immediate documentation – If a shoplifter does get away, employees can use two-way radios to inform their managers of distinguishing features: height, weight, hair color, etc. There is a possibility the shoplifter will return; if they do, the business already has a description on record.
