According to the September 13th article published by Natural News titled “Mediterranean-style low carb diet lowers diabetes risk by 20 percent,” processed and refined carbohydrates have the largest effect on diabetes since it elevates sugar levels. Many believe the only way to prevent diabetes is by using numerous pharmaceuticals, but research points to the contrary.

The article details a study by scientists at the Mario Negri Institute of Pharmacological Research in Milan, Italy. The research was based off of the effects of the Mediterranean diet, and it was found that this diet and other low-carb diets can actually help decrease the risk of developing type II diabetes. The researchers also found that the decrease in type II diabetes risk is largely due to the characteristics of the diet and not necessary because it helps control weight.

The study involved 22,295 participants who were studied over 11 years. The participants’ diets were scored using a 10 point system based on a constructed Mediterranean diet scale that measures the carbohydrates in a diet, with 10 being the highest. Those who had a score over 8 and had a diet with a high concentration of carbohydrates were 21 percent more likely to develop diabetes.

The study concluded that refined and processed foods can greatly increase the risk for developing diabetes. Since the labels of these foods are hard to decipher, the article suggests, eliminating “those foods that do not provide the majority of their carbohydrate load from naturally occurring, unprocessed sources to dramatically lower diabetes risk.”
