• The US is not the only country grappling with increased drug use and abuse – many countries worldwide are in the grips of a drug epidemic, including Britain, where cocaine and amphetamine abuse are considered by experts to be out of control.
“What we have to realize here is that the so-called war on drugs, which has been waged for over 40 years, isn’t working,” added Per Wickstrom. “That’s not to suggest that we should fly the white flag of surrender. Rather, it means that we need to change our approach by focusing our resources on programs that prevent drug and alcohol abuse from happening in the first place. We need to educate young people and empower them to make smart choices. We can’t stop this problem entirely through enforcement and treatment. We have to be proactive, not reactive.”
