“Replacing a toothbrush is something that needs to be done on a fairly regular basis," says Dr. Harvey Schwartz, owner of Main Street Dental Team. “Using a new toothbrush should happen approximately every three to four months."
Dr. Schwartz explains that what’s important to keep an eye on is the condition of the bristles. No matter what type of toothbrush being used, it won’t be effective if the bristles are worn out. Some toothbrushes will have indicators that change colour when bristles are fading, but a simple scan of the toothbrush should be enough to know when it’s time for it to be replaced.
“Although three to four months is the suggested timeline, other considerations need to be taken into account,” he adds. “For instance, being sick is an issue when brushing one’s teeth. It’s not a bad idea to toss away a toothbrush after recovering from a cold or fever, and certainly if recovering from something more serious.”
