Bull Burger Battle World Food Championships Best in Backyards

Skip Day, the winner of the Best in Backyards' Bull Burger Battle, prepares to compete in the burger portion of the World Food Championships.

We were thrilled to hear that Skip, Lizzie, Julie and Michael had such a great time in Vegas.

Skip and Lizzie Day--the team that took first place at the Best in Backyards' Bull Burger Battle in Mahopac, New York last May--had a fantastic experience participating in the World Food Championships.

The pair, competing as Swamp Pit BBQ, came in 35th out of 47 competitors at the November event. The submission was the Infamous Skippy Burger, a patty melt on Rye bread with onions and shallots.

While the burger did well presentation-wise, the team lost points on execution: Skip and Lizzie had practiced on a four-burner grill, but they had to make-do with one that had just three at the competition.

"We're competitive so of course there was disappointment. In fact, Lizzie suffered a lot of it," Skip said, adding that his daughter hopes to possibly pursue a culinary career one day in the future. "It took a lot to bring her back. I had to say 'Look ... you make the 35th best burger in the world! You have to realize you're in a position that a lot of people want to be in, but never get to.' After that she had a good outlook. It was a great learning experience."

In fact, Skip said, the overall experience was one he will never forget. He was accompanied by not only Lizzie, but also his wife Julie and son Michael. The family drove across the country, from their Long Island home, to the competition. They saw beautiful landscape along the way, and they made some great new friends.
"We were thrilled to hear that Skip, Lizzie, Julie and Michael had such a great time in Vegas," said Rolf Zimmermann, vice president of Best in Backyards. "We really hope Skip and Lizzie return for our next Bull Burger Battle."
