DETROIT, Aug. 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Bill Poulos, co-founder and president of Profits Run, Inc., awarded the Profits Run Starfish Award to Khali Sweeney for his work with the Downtown Boxing Gym, a free after-school academic and athletic program in Detroit. Poulos presents the Profits Run Starfish award to citizens who have made a difference in their community through acts of kindness, selflessness, or community advocacy.
Poulos shared, "The Profits Run Starfish Award celebrates the accomplishments of amazing individuals who are enhancing the lives of others. No matter how big or small the effort is, people can make a difference. The Profits Run Starfish Award recognizes individuals who constantly strive to make a difference in the world. Khali Sweeney is just this person. His passion and efforts to help the kids of Detroit have changed countless lives for the better."
Sweeney received a Profits Run Starfish Award plaque, a donation check, and a personal note from Poulos recognizing his accomplishments and thanking him for the positive changes he's made in the lives of thousands of Detroit children. "We sincerely appreciate this recognition," said Sweeney. "Everything we do at the Downtown Boxing Gym is a team effort. It's not about me or any one person - it's about our community, supporters, volunteers, staff, and others working together with the common goal of helping our students be the best they can be. We're not looking for the next boxer or star athlete, we're looking for the next genius, the next Einstein, who will help change the world."
The Downtown Boxing Gym was founded in 2007, providing mentorship, tutoring, enrichment programs and supporting students' basic needs. Its motto is "books before boxing." The program has an 11-year track record of success; 100% of participating students have graduated from high school.
To present the award, Poulos sent Sweeney a letter acknowledging his accomplishments. The note read, "Congratulations! You have been awarded the Profits Run Starfish Award in recognition of your selfless dedication and devotion to helping those in need. Through Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program—with each child tutored, mentored, fed, transported, and graduated—you have made an incredible difference. You have truly made lasting impacts on the lives of many young students and ultimately their futures. We at Profits Run applaud your continued service to positively influence the lives of others. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all that you do."
The Downtown Boxing Gym currently serves 150 Detroit students ages 8-18 who live in 30 different zip codes and attend 57 schools across the city. There is a waiting list of 850+ more students hoping to get into the program. The gym offers a wide range of programs that go beyond the classroom including music, art, computer coding, cooking classes and more. Programs are all provided free of charge. Students are simply required to focus on their schoolwork and participate in community service to give back to their community.
In an interview, Sweeney said, "Boxing is the 'hook' to get and keep kids in the program. Teaching them to be productive members of society is our passion." The Detroit-based nonprofit will host its inaugural fundraising gala on October 12th, 2019. The revenue will increase the gym's ability to add more students to the program.
