Biomet Hip Lawsuits
According to court documents, the Biomet M2a Magnum hip is a metal-on-metal device in which the ball and cup consist of a chromium-cobalt alloy. Biomet hip lawsuits allege that this design is defective, and can allow dangerous amounts of metal ions to be shed in to the tissue and blood stream of recipients. The complaints further allege that recipients of this Biomet hip replacement are at risk for metallosis, pseudotumor formation, premature device failure and other serious complications that may necessitate revision of the hip.
The U.S Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety communication this past January cautioning that metal-on-metal hips were more likely to fail at five years of surgery compared to devices manufactured of other materials. Among other things, the agency has proposed regulations that would subject all-metal hips to greater regulatory scrutiny. The FDA has also advised metal-on-metal hip recipients to undergo blood testing for high levels of metal ions if they experience any symptoms that might indicate their hip implant is not functioning correctly.
Biomet M2a Magnum hip recipients may be entitled to financial compensation if they experienced any complications allegedly related to its all-metal design.
