Brookhaven Retreat is committed to providing the most up-to-date, quality care for women with mental health and substance abuse issues. To do so, all staff members are encouraged to continue their training and expand their therapeutic skills by regularly attending workshops and professional courses. As part of this dedication to excellence, Brookhaven Retreat sent Primary Therapist Sharon Moore to EMDR Basic Training in Nashville, November 13-17.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) has been proven to effectively treat the destructive aftermath of trauma and PTSD. According to the National Center for PTSD, almost 8 percent of Americans will experience post-traumatic stress disorder in their lives, and because women are at a greater risk of exposure to trauma such as sexual assault, war and physical abuse, they are twice as likely to suffer from the distressing nightmares, flashbacks, depression and anxiety of PTSD.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized therapy method that uses eye movements and tones or taps to stimulate both sides of the brain simultaneously. In a safe environment, EMDR enables women to process the trauma with a certified therapist, eventually allowing the trauma to carry less significance and become less debilitating to daily life.

The five-day training provides Brookhaven Retreat’s clinical team with the skills and knowledge to successfully incorporate EMDR into their clients’ therapeutic care in the safest and most effective way possible.

Brookhaven Retreat is thrilled to have a staff that is dedicated to advancing their skills and expanding their therapeutic care. With a highly skilled team Brookhaven Retreat is able to continue helping women explore their trauma and breakthrough crushing emotional pain to create a life filled with joy, satisfaction and hope.
