Brookhaven Retreat Promotes Sun Safety in Recognition of UV Safety Month during July
Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) July 14, 2016 -- Brookhaven Retreat®, LLC, a unique residential treatment facility exclusively for women with mental health and/or substance abuse issues, promotes sun safety in recognition of UV Safety Month during July.
UV Safety Month is held each July to help raise awareness and prevention of UV related conditions. The sun and sunlamps give off UV rays. Increased or unprotected exposure to UV rays can cause sunburns, suppressed immune system response, premature aging of skin, sun spots, cataracts, and/or skin cancer. By taking steps to decrease unprotected or extended UV exposure, you can greatly decrease your risk for these conditions.
As your largest organ, your skin serves as protection against heat, sunlight, injuries, and infection. It is essential to protect your skin from harmful UV rays so that you can live a healthy life. Some exposure to sunlight is healthy and essential for vitamin D absorption; however, too much exposure can be harmful and even dangerous to your health.
As part of The Lily Program®, a 90-day treatment for women offered exclusively at Brookhaven Retreat, clients are encouraged to care for their health through prevention and treatment for their mental and physical wellbeing.
Throughout the month of July, Brookhaven Retreat clients are provided with tips for sun safety in recognition of UV Safety Month. Below are some of the tips that were shared:
- Prevent Sunburns. Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, even on cloudy days. This includes during warm and cold weather.
- Take Shade. Try to stay in the shade during peak sun hours (generally between the hours of 10am and 4pm) as much as possible.
- Protect Exposed Skin. Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves, pants, broad-brimmed hats, and sunglasses when exposed to the sun.
- Remember the Glare Factor. Surfaces that produce glares, such as water, snow, or sand, reflect UV rays and can increase the amount of UV rays you are exposed to. Be mindful of this and increase your protection when around these types of surfaces.
