Capt. H.J. Pettersen wanted to instill a sense of adventure in children. He believes that there is an adventure out there for each one of them. This goal prompted him to write “Port Orford’s Youngest Fisherman” (published by Archway Publishing), a coming-of-age story for young readers that follows the adventures of a young boy as he tries to overcome adversity to become a successful fisherman.
The book tells the story of 8-year-old Cable Dent whose parents died unexpectedly. His grandfather, Phil, vows to raise him straight and strong, to make him a fine fisherman, respected among the fleet. The two live in Phil’s fisherman’s shack in the little coastal village of Port Orford, Oregon. With the help of his friend, Amy, Cable works through his grief and finds a new home.
Cable loves helping Phil on his fishing boat, the Tulla, and learning all there is to know about the sea. But Phil suffers a stroke and Cable must take his knowledge and make a living for them both. Will Cable weather the challenges and reap its rewards?
“This is an easy, feel-good read,” Pettersen says. “Everyone is a winner. There are lots of good life lessons, knowledge about ocean fishing, being resourceful and solving problems.”
Pettersen’s background supported all the information in the book. He was raised in the San Juan Islands, fished salmon and tuna off the Pacific coast, king crab, salmon, halibut and black cod in Alaskan waters at age 8. He started skippering boats himself at 13 years old.
