Springfield, MO auto accident attorney Terry A. Tolbert of Tolbert Beadle & Musgrave, LLC, says more educational efforts are needed to keep people from driving while intoxicated.

It’s illegal and also morally reprehensible to leave the scene of an accident when someone is seriously injured or worse.

Responding to news of a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a Missouri man, Springfield, MO car accident attorney Terry A. Tolbert said today that both driving drunk and leaving the scene of an accident are acts of negligence that won’t be tolerated in Missouri.

The Branson Tri-Lakes News reports that a Merriam Woods, MO man was arrested Aug. 19 in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident. The driver was stopped by police on suspicion of driving drunk shortly after he allegedly struck a pedestrian, whose body was found in the middle of the road, according to the report.

“The allegations in this case are alarming. Generally speaking, drivers must stop and render aid if they are involved in an accident. It’s illegal and also morally reprehensible to leave the scene of an accident when someone is seriously injured or worse,” said Tolbert, who represents victims of negligence and families whose loved ones were killed in accidents. “Drunk driving accidents happen far too often in Missouri. As personal injury attorneys, we have seen first-hand the devastating impact of drunk driving and hit-and-run car accidents. That’s why we fight aggressively for clients and support educational and legislative efforts to keep intoxicated drivers off Missouri roads.”

According to the Branson Tri-Lakes News, the driver of the vehicle allegedly struck the pedestrian during the early hours of Monday, Aug. 19, and failed to stop at the scene of the accident. The driver was later apprehended by law enforcement after allegedly failing a field sobriety test and Breathalyzer test hours afterward.

In addition, the Branson Tri-Lakes News also reported that the driver admitted fault and acknowledged that he was aware of the accident and left the scene.

“Drunk driving kills in Missouri, but victims and families have rights,” said Tolbert, a car accident lawyer in Springfield, MO. “Victims of hit-and-run accidents and drunk drivers alike may face significant losses, and that’s why they may need a personal injury attorney to protect their rights. An attorney can help them pursue compensation and closure and send a message that drunk driving and other acts of recklessness on our roads will not be tolerated.”
