According to CBS Detroit, the study was conducted by website http://www.insurancequotes.com and examined the average premiums in the 25 largest metropolitan areas across the United States. While Detroit residents paid up to 165 percent more than the national average, the article revealed drivers in the next closest city, New York City, only paid 36 percent more than the national average.
Officials from insurancequotes.com told CBS Detroit that they believed premiums were higher than the national average because of Michigan’s status as a no-fault insurance state, requiring insurance companies to compensate injury victims regardless of who is at fault. Furthermore, the report states that Michigan is the only state where car insurance includes unlimited personal injury protection for accident victims left with lifetime accident-related expenses.
