The report echoes what we’ve been saying for years at Flager & Associates: Car accidents happen far too often, and people in many cases are seriously injured or worse.
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) November 14, 2014
A new government report underscores how common and serious car accidents are throughout the U.S., said Philadelphia personal injury lawyer Randall C. Flager of Flager & Associates.
Commenting on a report about a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study published in Philly.com, Flager said the article should serve as a reminder to all motorists to use caution. Flager added that anyone injured may need to seek the advice of legal counsel because the report shows how expensive crash-related costs can be. (U.S. Traffic Accidents Send 2.5 Million to ERs Each Year, CDC says,” HealthDay News report published in Philly.com, Oct. 8, 2014).
“The report echoes what we’ve been saying for years at Flager & Associates: Car accidents happen far too often, and people in many cases are seriously injured or worse,” said Flager, a car accident lawyer with more than 30 years’ experience. “We know that driver distraction is a major factor in these accidents, especially now that more and more people have smart phones. Our advice is for drivers to avoid using their phones for talking or texting. Drivers need to focus on the important task of operating their vehicles. Too much is at stake to take risky chances.”
According to the Philly.com report, more than 2.5 million people were treated at emergency rooms in 2012 because of car accident injuries. The CDC report states that nearly 200,000 people received hospital treatment because of car crashes, according to Philly.com.
The CDC reports that the lifetime medical expenses for all of the 2012 crash injuries totaled $18 billion ($10 billion for those admitted to the hospital and $8 billion for those treated in ERs), Philly.com states.
As an experienced car accident attorney, Flager said he knows that crashes can have a far-reaching financial impact. The costs can include not only expenses related to hospitals and emergency rooms but also wage losses.
According to the CDC report, all of the 2012 crash-related injuries translated to $33 billion in work lost over a lifetime.
The following are other facts from the study:
- The average lifetime cost for each crash-related ER visit was $3,300.
- The average lifetime cost for each crash-related hospitalization was $57,000.
- Three-quarters of the costs occur during the first 18 months after the injury.
- Young people between 15 and 29 face a higher risk of car accident injuries than others and accounted for nearly 1 million of the crash injuries in 2012.
- People 80 and older had the highest hospitalization rates, with one-third of that age group needing hospitalization related to their car crash injuries.
- ER visits and hospitalizations were not as frequent in 2012 as in 2003.
Flager said car accident injuries can be prevented. “We know that people can become safer drivers. They can make wise choices, such as never drinking and driving and avoiding use of cell phones and other devices,” Flager said. “We also hope to see improvements made to driving education programs for teens. Parents should talk to their kids about developing safe driving habits and should set good examples by avoiding dangerous behavior behind the wheel.”
Anyone who is injured in a car accident or who loses a loved one should speak to an experienced attorney who can hold the negligent individual or company accountable and send a message that such behavior will not be tolerated, Flager said.
