MECHANICSBURG, Pa.— The 2016 sedan and coupe models of the Honda Accord have earned Top Safety Pick+ ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the distinction to models that are equipped with the optional front crash prevention. This crash prevention system is part of the Honda Sensing package of driver assisted computer technologies.
This Top Safety Pick+ rating is only awarded to vehicles that have a front crash prevention system that scores an advanced or superior rating from the IIHS. Both sedan and coupe models of the Accord earned a top rating of superior in-vehicle testing for their front crash prevention systems. Along with this Top Safety+ pick status, the Honda Accord also scored a top rating of GOOD in five of the IIHS's test modes.
"Honda Sensing is an amazing suite of assistive technologies at the driver's fingertips," said Randy Rumberger, business development manager at Bobby Rahal Honda. "The front crash prevention system is just the beginning with this great new technology. It also includes a collision mitigating braking system, a lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and a host of other features designed to keep Honda drivers and passengers the safest ones on the road."
All 2016 Honda Accord models can be equipped with the Honda Sensing suite. It is available as an upgrade standalone option in the LX, LX-S, Sport, EX and EX-L trims, while it is included as a standard feature for the touring trim. This new safety system is the most comprehensive of its kind currently offered in Accord's midsize vehicle class. The suite uses sensor fusion technology that seamlessly integrates the monocular camera system, mounted on the car's windshield, with the millimeter wave radar, which sits on the front of the vehicle grill. This technology gives the vehicle the ability to identify and anticipate a variety of crash and collision scenarios, even those involving a pedestrian.
If the Honda Sensing system anticipates a collision, it can either initiate a warning to the driver or, in some cases, it can even initiate emergency braking.
