Carol Ferring Shepley’s New Book Tells Woman’s True Story of Unique Approach to Parkinson’s
St. Louis (PRWEB) April 17, 2014 -- According to The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke nearly 500,000 people suffer from Parkinson’s disease in the U.S.. Typically the disease affects those over the age of 60; however, in some cases it can strike people under 50. For 55-year-old Lori Patin, Parkinson’s was not only unexpected – it was crushing. Written by Carol Ferring Shepley, “Lori’s Lessons: What Parkinson’s Teaches about Life and Love” (published by iUniverse) tells Lori’s inspirational and true story.
“Lori’s Lessons” follows Lori and her husband and caretaker, Bob, as Lori faces the incurable Parkinson’s diagnosis with courage and pride. Readers will watch as Lori transforms from someone who once wanted to “cry until she died,” into someone who faces the disease, and life, with inner strength.
Many battle Parkinson’s using medicine and traditional treatments, but for Lori a combination of the two wasn’t enough. Upon the realization that her disease wasn’t improving, Lori decided that with her new lifestyle should come a new approach – her 360-degree method was born. Lori compares her attack on Parkinson’s to the five spokes of a wheel, utilizing caregivers and diet, family and friends, medicine and exercise, spirituality and sleep as her tools for fighting the disease.
While Lori’s approach still utilizes medicine and some traditional remedies, her husband largely attributes her near-remission-like state to her tenacity, hope, and faith. Lori is confident her approach will not only help others facing Parkinson’s, but also help readers cope with any of life’s overwhelming challenges.
“There is very little in life that you can’t turn to your advantage if you think about it the right way,” Shepley says of Lori’s attitude.
Shepley was introduced to Lori and Bob through mutual friends, after it was suggested she write their story. Within hours of meeting them, Shepley was touched by Lori’s story and courage, and hopes her book can relay that same sentiment to readers.
