A new study from gadget trade-in comparison site Cashforphonescomparison, shows that over half of all smartphones traded in in 2014 so far are Android devices. This is almost double the iOS market share of just a 31.67 percent.

1. Android – 53.06 percent*
2. iOS – 31.13 percent*

Site experts say this is particularly interesting as over the same period of time in 2013, the two operating systems had a much more equal online trade-in market share.

Analysts say that although this year’s data could reflect the number of Android releases in comparison to the lack of iOS releases – this is actually highly unlikely. 2013 followed the same pattern in terms of releases and yet the data shows a much more similar market share.
What are people doing when they trade-in?
Cashforphonescomparison also conducted a survey, asking people trading in an old device what they plan to upgrade too.
67.97 percent of people trading in an Android device said they were staying loyal to Android, with 31.35 percent saying they were moving to iOS – showing strong platform loyalty.
The same can be said for iOS consumers – with 71.72 percent saying they would stick to iOS, with 25.75 percent saying they’d switch to Android.
The site do think it’s interesting to note activity from Windows Phone users though. 43.9 percent of people trading in an old Windows Phone are moving to iOS, while 37.12 percent are moving to Android.
So what does this show?
This suggests that the smartphone market is still very split between the two operating systems.
Site experts say this is very much a reflection of the market over the last two years, as Apple dominated the market before this point. Now, Android makes up a larger smartphone market share. People have more choice than ever, and switch between operating systems depending on the devices available.
