San Antonio Eye Center Advises on Night Time Driving
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) December 02, 2013 -- Now that daylight saving time has ended, the number of daylight hours has decreased, which means more drivers are on the road in the dark. Older drivers may pose a greater hazard on the roads at night due to vision problems. San Antonio Eye Center wants to share some advice for ensuring seniors exhibit safety when driving in the dark.
First and foremost, having an eye exam at least once every two years or more frequently for those who have an eye condition or are diabetic, is necessary. Patients should let their eye doctor know about any problems with night vision while driving. There are specialized tests the doctor can perform to evaluate visual field and contrast sensitivity.
There are also special eyeglasses that can help patients to see better on the road at night. Glasses can have anti-reflective coatings, or there are lenses that can reduce glare, light bursts or other distractions.
This advice comes in addition to the basic driving safety measures seniors should take: don’t use a cell phone while driving, use extra caution at intersections, avoid unfamiliar streets, slow down, drive defensively, keep windows clear and make sure the car is well-maintained, and plan for extra driving time.
When seniors take all of these measures, they can greatly reduce their risk while driving in the dark. Patients experiencing any issues driving at night should make an appointment to see their eye doctor for an eye exam immediately.
