According to an August 30th article on Fox Business titled “Don’t Overlook the Potential of Smaller Clients,” most companies think landing one big account will help them skyrocket to success. However, like the article states, “An elephant doesn’t get fat ignoring the peanuts.”
Successful companies rarely turn down smaller accounts. “They realize that these organizations have real needs, and that like calories in peanuts, the dollar amount substantially adds up with large consumption,” the article says.
Lawrence Teicher, founder of CFO Consulting Services and leading Long Island CPA, says that smaller clients can be just as beneficial to a company as larger clients. “Smaller clients are great for business,” he says. “They are also more personal and their executives are more accessible. It makes your job a little easier too. It’s always good to do business with a company that you can form a healthy relationship with.”
From a CFO perspective Teicher says it’s poor business strategy to deny clients because of their size. “Regardless of the size of your company, taking on a smaller client is hardly ever a bad business decision,” he says. “Small businesses have the most opportunity for growth and when they expand, you want to be known for your loyal services. As those clients grow and become medium or large-sized companies, they will continue doing business with you because you were helping them when they were just a small startup. Usually these types of relationships prove to be lucrative in the end.”
