Philanthropic specialty loose leaf tea company The Tea Spot, Inc. today announced a new premium tea blend, launching for the holiday season. The new offering, Mile High Chai, exhibits distinctive flavors and spices rooted in traditional Indian masala chai tea while maintaining a high quality loose leaf tea as the base to this black tea favorite.

Mile High Chai is a spicy, fragrant tea made on a premium Assam black tea base blended with ginger root, cardamom, cinnamon, allspice, peppercorns and cloves. The red color of the peppercorns and the green cardamom pods in this loose tea blend add to the timeliness of this holiday release.

The origin of this newest Spice Tea from The Tea Spot begins over 5,000 years ago in South Asia, when it was created as a healing Ayurvedic warming tonic and digestive aid, originally without tea. With the advent of British tea plantations in India in the 19th century, tea was added to the spicy beverage. Its popularity then spread throughout South Asia, and has since persisted and spread throughout the world.

Chai is the Hindi term for tea in India. In the western world, it most often refers to a strong, sweetened black tea mixed with milk and masala, a blend of spices. The unmistakable aroma and taste of traditional Indian masala chai spices is often made up of cardamom, star anise, fennel, pepper, clove, coriander, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and sometimes cumin or saffron.

The black tea base for this blend is Assam, a strong Indian black tea. Assam is characterized by its distinctive malty aroma and honey finish to the taste. Assam tea steeps up into a dark liquor. Adding milk to the tea turns it to a characteristically ruby-amber hue.
