Top 10 factors considered when choosing a cloud business app

If there was ever a time for SaaS providers to communicate how they keep their clients’ data secure, it would be now.

GetApp, a cloud-based business apps marketplace, has released survey results of the top ten most important factors for users when choosing cloud business software. Security took the number one spot as the most important factor, while ease of use came in at a close second.

The survey, based on responses from 1000 small business owners, was conducted as part of GetApp’s independent research program called GetData, which aims to fully understand the true impact of SaaS (Software as a Service) solutions on small and medium-sized businesses. SaaS and cloud-based apps refer to third-party business solutions or software that are hosted in the cloud, as opposed to locally on a desktop or internal servers.

From the ten possible factors, scalability and speed of implementation ranked lowest on the list of priorities when deciding on which cloud-based business apps to onboard. Affordability– perhaps not surprisingly for small business owners– was high on the list at number three, while having a range of features and flexibility rounded out the top five.

Christophe Primault, co-founder and CEO of GetApp, says, “It’s clear that as small and medium-sized businesses start making the transition from more traditional, desktop-based applications to cloud-based solutions, security is at the forefront of people’s minds. This is understandable considering that company and customer data would traditionally be stored locally or within a controlled environment. Now, businesses have to place trust in third-party providers to control this data. If there was ever a time for SaaS providers to communicate how they keep their clients’ data secure, it would be now.”

The GetData survey also highlights what some in the industry may consider to be surprising results; along with scalability and speed of implementation, available integrations, quality of customer support and peer reviews also featured at the bottom of the list when choosing a new cloud app.

Demographics: 1000 USA-based respondents from a panel of small and medium-sized business owners with an average inferred income of between $25k-$45k.
