The all-new Cigar Advisor Magazine is an online cigar magazine that brings a fresh, irreverent, and down-to-earth perspective on all things cigars to thousands of smokers. In addition to educational cigar content and behind-the-scenes cigar industry articles from some of the business’s top names, Cigar Advisor delivers an array of content about a variety of topics of interest to people who enjoy the cigar lifestyle. The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers. Cigar Advisor Magazine has just published a new article in its November issue. The article, entitled, "So, You Want to Open a Distillery," was written by Scott Spolverino, who holds a Master of Science in Brewing and Distilling, and serves as a technical consultant to the distilling industry, with a specific focus on whiskey and wood maturation. The piece details the process of opening a commercial distillery.

In the article, Spolverino writes humorously about a set of circumstances leading to the reader's wanting to open a distillery. "Unfortunately," he writes, "there's a lot of time between the government reviewing and approving your license and actually DOING anything with said license. So what can you do in the mean time?"

From here, Spolverino dishes out some practical advice, beginning with visiting other distilleries. He recommends not only visiting and networking with craft distillers, but also learning from the "big boys" of Kentucky and Scotland, paying special attention to their focus on efficiency.

Additional steps include sourcing and visiting grain suppliers and cooperages, which make barrels for aging spirits.

Finally, he recommends drinking... a lot. "Don't limit yourself to one kind of spirit," Spolverino writes. Instead, [t]ry everything you can get your hands on. Whiskey, gin, tequila, cordials, liqueurs, brandies, everything! Not only will it give you a sense of direction in where you want to go with your product line, it will also give you a better idea of what's out there in the market. And, maybe, just maybe, what the market DOESN'T have."
