Christian Eiroa of CLE cigars talks about his family's history in the cigar business

A lot of people have heard the stories of Castro's takeover of Cuba, or about cigar makers and tobacco farmers fleeing the island with a pocketful of seeds. Not that these stories aren't important, but I felt that something was missing.

The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers. Cigar Advisor Magazine has just release an article in its December issue, entitled "Growing Up Tobacco - A Tobacco Story: Settling the New Frontier." The article was written by famous cigar maker and Cigar Advisor contributor Christian Eiroa as part of his series, "Growing Up Tobacco."

"A lot of people have heard the stories of Castro's takeover of Cuba, or about cigar makers and tobacco farmers fleeing the island with a pocketful of seeds. Not that these stories aren't important, but I felt that something was missing," he said of the article.

The piece focuses on his father and uncle, who fled Cuba with their mother, and went on to be among the first to begin cultivating cigar tobacco in Central America. They weren't alone: tobacco brokers like Angel Oliva lead the charge, with tobacco explorers like Tino Argudin exploring the land, looking for ideal places to plant a crop.

"Many people don't realize that Central America - specifically the Dominican, Honduras, and Nicaragua - had no tobacco industry, because everything was coming from Cuba. These areas were only opened up and developed for cigar production after the United States Embargo against Cuba shut down trade between the nations, outlawing the importation of cigars in the United States, which is the world's largest premium cigar market.
