Many Native American tribes used a mixture of tobacco in rituals bearing spiritual significance, and some of them even developed a theology around tobacco.

The all-new Cigar Advisor is an online cigar magazine that brings a fresh, irreverent, and down-to-earth perspective on all things cigars to thousands of smokers. In addition to educational cigar content and behind-the-scenes cigar industry articles from some of the business’s top names, Cigar Advisor delivers an array of content about a variety of topics of interest to people who enjoy the cigar lifestyle. The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers. Cigar Advisor has just published a new article in its September 2013 issue entitled, "Cigar Smoking as a Spiritual Experience."

Systematic Theologian and Cigar Advisor contributor Greg Filer reconciles the simple pleasure of smoking a cigar with living a godly life in his new piece, “Cigar Smoking as a Spiritual Experience.”

In the article, Filer begins by describing the "long history of tobacco use in the spiritual ceremonies of many different faith traditions. In particular," he writes, "many Native American tribes used a mixture of tobacco in rituals bearing spiritual significance, and some of them even developed a theology around tobacco. The Lakota people, for example, have some of the most robust theology around tobacco use. In their tradition, tobacco and the pipe are a holy gift, and smoking is a form of prayer."

Filer goes on to define his perspective as "influenced by an American Lutheran, Christian theology and understanding of spirituality," using that background to define what a spiritual experience is, by first defining what a spirit is, and how cigar smoking might qualify as a positive or negative spiritual experience.

Filer notes that, "in addition to finding smoking to be a positive spiritual experience, I personally derive much enjoyment, relaxation, and peace from the process of smoking a good cigar. Like any process that is part of a meditative practice, it even has health benefits."

Readers interested in learning more about Filer’s position are encouraged to read his article in this month’s Cigar Advisor Magazine.
