It is refreshing to be working with a client and city that is willing to challenge the established procedures to try and determine what they can do to better and more efficiently accomplish their purposes.

The City of Long Beach, California has asked local architecture firm, M. Grisafe Architects to develop and publish a case study that describes the process of working with the city on a commercial improvement project. M. Grisafe Architects was approached by the city through their client, Deep Blue Swim School, with whom they are currently working on a tenant improvement project. The study will assess the process for obtaining permits and working with the various departments within the city of Long Beach, including Planning, Building, Health, Fire and Water.

The case study was requested by Amy Bodek, Director of Development Services for the City of Long Beach and Angela Reynolds, Deputy Director. The city has come under criticism recently with regard to their operations and this case study will be used to help the city better understand any problems in their current operations and how processes can be improved to address any difficulties.

Mark Grisafe, Owner of M. Grisafe Architects said, “We are looking forward to presenting our case study for a number of reasons, not the least of which is, we love the City of Long Beach and are committed to helping it improve its relationship with development professionals. Our architecture firm has always maintained a good working relationship with the city, but we are glad to assist in helping to improve the processes involved when interfacing with the various departments for plans and permits.”

“Often, architects will take a project through the review plan process knowing that they will have to accept that city’s particular idiosyncrasies,” said Mr. Grisafe, “It is refreshing to be working with a client and city that is willing to challenge the established procedures to try and determine what they can do to better and more efficiently accomplish their purposes.”

Mr. Grisafe is expected to deliver his case study and present his findings to the City of Long Beach in a sit-down meeting in the next few days.
