City Bike Designer Linus Bike Comments on Needed Changes in U.S. Cycling Infrastructure
Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) July 16, 2013 -- On July 16, city bike designer, Linus Bike, comments on an article that discusses steps the U.S. needs to take in order to increase cycling.
According to a July 16th, 2013 article, published on MinnPost.com, entitled, “For more bikes to ride in U.S., cycling’s image and infrastructure must change, says Dutch rider,” cycling has grown in popularity throughout the U.S. in recent years. However, it hasn’t caught on with the “broader public.”
This year alone, eighteen different U.S. cities are launching bike-sharing programs. Minneapolis, which was named the “No. 1 bicycling city in the U.S.” by Bicycling Magazine in 2012 but still only four percent of residents bike to work. In comparison to Amsterdam, thirty percent of residents regularly commute to work by bike and an additional forty percent occasionally ride.
Mark Wagenbuur, author of blog Bicycle Dutch, elaborates on why cycling hasn’t yet been developed in the U.S. like it has overseas in Europe. “The main difference between the U.S. and the Netherlands is that cycling is not seen as transportation in the U.S. by general public.” In order to get more Americans onto bikes, the U.S. cycling community needs to change its image while working on better cycling infrastructure; adding bike lanes, launching bike-share programs, etc.
Jason Latty, a representative from Linus Bike, a city bike designer, comments further on the changes that need to be made in the U.S. “The country’s major metropolises are taking steps in the right direction with introducing bike-share programs within their respective cities. Getting more people to ride bicycles has environmental, communal, and financial benefits for any city. Incorporating more cycling infrastructure into a city’s transport infrastructure is a no-brainer.”
