Recognition confirms agency’s commitment to “use business as a force for good”

Civilian, a full-service marketing communications agency dedicated to building stronger communities, today announced it has earned the Certified B Corporation (B Corp) designation. To achieve the certification, Civilian had to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. In San Diego, Civilian is one of only four agencies and 13 companies who have received this recognition.

Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, Kickstarter and Athleta are all examples of B Corps, which are for-profit companies that “use business as a force for good.” Certified by the not-for-profit B Lab, these companies are redefining success in business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. B Corp certification is to business what Fair Trade is to coffee or USDA Organic is to milk: verified proof to consumers and clients of responsible business practices.

“We are proud that a thorough review of our business operations met the rigorous requirements this certification demands,” said Stacey Nelson Smith, Founder and CEO of Civilian. “While we have always been socially and environmentally responsible, and committed to our employees and the community, becoming a B Corp gives us a way to specifically measure and strive to improve our performance in these areas.”

Civilian’s related 2019 goals and initiatives include a new paid volunteer time off program; mentorship and pro-bono service for programs serving foster youth and college students; and a pledge to become “carbon neutral” by reducing and offsetting emissions from the agency’s energy use, commuting and business travel.

As part of their certification terms, B Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Civilian joins more than 2,600 Certified B Corps in over 150 industries and 60 countries with a single unifying goal—to redefine success in business.
